the macbook air m3 is the laptop i stopped noticing

a midnight macbook air with its lid closed on a wooden table, magsafe cable attached

In march of last year I was on a client call when my old laptop's fans spun up so loud the client asked, very politely, if I was vacuuming. I was not vacuuming. I was rendering one (1) moderately sized Figma file. That afternoon I closed the call, opened the Apple website, and behaved like a person with no impulse control.

what the honest bit looks like

I paid $1,499 plus tax in march 2024 for the 13 inch air with 16 gigabytes of memory and 512 of storage, in midnight. I paid the launch price like a sucker with a deadline, and I did not even use the education discount, because I forgot my old student email existed until the order was already placed. Then I bought a $34 hard shell case within 48 hours, because midnight scratches if you look at it wrong, and I look at things wrong for a living.

The tally so far:

the honest tally item 01 of 48
thing what it cost
13 inch m3 air, 16gb 512gb, midnight $1,499
hard shell case $34
my dignity during the vacuuming call incalculable

One thing I need to say plainly: the m3 air is discontinued now. Apple replaced it with the M4 in march 2025 at $999, with more memory in the base model and a nicer webcam, and the m3 quietly left the store. If you are buying today, do not copy my exact receipt. Copy the shape of my lesson instead, which is that I panicked and overpaid and still ended up happy, which is a disturbing pattern in my life.

what i actually care about, in order of care

It is silent. No fan, ever, under any workload I have thrown at it. The old laptop sounded like a small airport. This one does nothing. I edit a big artboard with 40 layers and a blur effect and it just sits there being warm-ish and quiet. I have worked in bed next to a sleeping dog and there was no whirr to apologize for. Silence is a feature you cannot unmiss once you have it.

It weighs 2.7 pounds and I carry it like it weighs nothing. My bag is a canvas tote with a dent from a can of soup, and the air lives in there alongside a water bottle and whatever paperback I am lying about reading. My shoulder stopped filing complaints. When you are taking your laptop to three coffee shops a week, weight is not a spec, it is your whole relationship with the object.

The battery is real. Apple's number is up to 18 hours, and my honest number is that on a writing plus Figma day I end around 40 percent without ever plugging in. I have charged it every other evening since summer. The MagSafe connector also deserves its own sentence because it catches the cable if a dog trips over it, which, ask me how I know.

The display is lovely and stuck at 60hz. 13.6 inches, 500 nits, wide P3 color, and text that looks like it was printed rather than lit. It is a gorgeous screen and then you scroll a long page and feel the slight drag that 120hz screens do not have. Designers feel this. Everyone else gets to be happy. I made my peace with it in about four days.

Two usb-c ports and MagSafe, all on the left side, and the right side is a crime scene of nothing. No sd card slot, which for an ex print designer is personal, so there is a little adapter living on my keyring like a conjoined twin of my house keys. Plugging in a monitor and power means the left side of my desk looks like a cable nest. It is the one place the air feels smaller than it pretends to be.

The webcam and speakers got quietly good. 1080p camera, four speakers, and microphones that make my radiator-crackle apartment sound like a podcast. On calls people stopped saying "you're breaking up" and started saying "your lighting is nice," which is a much better conversation.

the midnight problem, a tangent 🌙

I need to talk about the color. Midnight is this blue-black anodized aluminum that looks like a lake at 10pm, and I love it, and it shows every fingerprint, every crumb, every trace of the cardamom bun I absolutely was eating over the keyboard. Week one I left a smudge the exact shape of my thumb and spent twenty minutes buffing it with the cloth that came in the box. My mom has the starlight iphone and it never looks dirty, ever, and when I told her this she said "that is because you chose a color for the ten seconds when it is new." Devastating. Accurate. I would choose midnight again tomorrow.

That is the thing about color, in design and in laptops: it is a maintenance decision wearing a fashion decision's outfit. Pick the one whose crumbs you can live with.

the soft landing

Sometimes I think about whether I should have gone for the 15 inch for drawing on the couch, but then I picture carrying it up my three flights of stairs and my arms make the decision for

And the true thing, the one I would tattoo on a tote bag if tote bag tattoos were covered by insurance: this is the first piece of technology I own that quietly does the thing while I am busy being a person. I stopped noticing it, which might be the nicest review there is.

Go be gentle with your computers.
